Daily Preview
Although Nadal and Muller were dominant on serve in the first set, losing a combined 14 points, the Spaniard found himself down 15-40 serving at 4-5.
He responded with two un-returnable serves, and then he went on to win the tiebreaker.
Because they were placed on Court No. 1, play was suspended when it started raining.
When play resumed on Saturday, both players continued to hold with ease until the second set tiebreaker.
Once again, Muller had his chances in the tiebreaker, but he failed to capitalize and Nadal earned a two set lead.
The loss of the second set seemed to deflate Muller. Nadal broke Muller three times in the final set, including in the first game, to win the final set in about half an hour.
Despite his narrow victories in the first two sets, Nadal played a clinical match. He had 30 winners to three unforced errors and he won 78 percent of his service points.
He’ll need to replicate today’s performance against his next opponent, 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina.
He hit 45 winners to 19 unforced errors, 19 aces and he won 74 percent of his service points, compared to Simon’s 40 winners, 24 unforced errors, 11 aces and 64 percent of points won on serve.
Nadal has a 5-3 record against del Potro, and he won their last match at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open in straight sets.
Del Potro has proven he can beat the Spaniard in consecutive matches, though. In 2009, he defeated the Spaniard three times in a row, including a 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 drubbing in the US Open semifinals.
In the same quarter of the draw, sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic eliminated one of the last two American men, Alex Bogomolov Jr., 6-2, 6-4, 6-3.
He faces the last American, Mardy Fish, in the fourth round.
